The pocket Lighter is an essential tool for many people. Not only can it be used to light up a cigarette, but it's also an excellent way to start a campfire or cook food.

The most common lighters use a sparking flint mechanism. This means that when the sparkwheel is struck it strikes against a piece of flint, which then ignites the gas in the fuel well and creates a flame.

In the 19th century lighters were primarily made in brass but silver lighters were also produced, however the most famous pocket lighters were made from ferrocerium (a type of flint). Carl Auer von Welsbach invented a type of flint called "ferrocerium" that could be scratched to produce a large spark which ignited the fuel inside the fuel well.
