How do pocket lighters work?
In a nutshell, pocket lighters use an electric arc to create heat that's used to light objects. This is much safer and more convenient than traditional lighters that use combustible fuels, like butane.
They also aren't nearly as single-use as plastic butane lighters, which churn out by the billions every year. Moreover, USB-rechargeable lighters can be taken anywhere, making them perfect for camping or hiking.

How to light a lighter?
You can light a cigarette with a standard lighter, but you'll need an electric lighter for more advanced lighting. These are battery-powered and use an electric arc to create a flame.

How to light an electric arc lighter?
You need to strike the sparkwheel at the same time that you press down on the ignition button. This is easier than it sounds, but you may need to try it a few times before it feels right.
The ignition button is on the end of the lighter, usually shaped like a button. On Bic lighters, it's red plastic, and on Zippo lighters it's round and metallic.

How to light a Zippo lighter?
In the case of a Zippo lighter, you'll need a narrow, sturdy object to pry open the safety band at the bottom of the flame hole. This is there to protect children from accidentally using the lighter.
After removing the safety band, you can turn the sparkwheel to make a spark. Just don't touch the area between the electrodes if you want to avoid accidental contact.
